Animal Welfare Friends Shelter – Monticello, IA

The ideal candidate will be customer-service and animal oriented.
The hours for this position are variable and may change from week to week.
Any candidate must be able to work with and around animals, including diseased, injured and/or vicious animals. Work conditions may include loud noises, chemicals, inclement weather, and evening and weekend hours. Allergic conditions which would be aggravated when handling or working with animals may be a disqualification. Candidates must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Iowa Driver’s License and have a satisfactory driving record.
Above all, candidate must have affection for animals, concern for their welfare and a willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Helps maintain animal flow through the shelter
- Helps ensure that animals are properly accounted for and entered into software and on websites
- Monitors animal intakes and disposition
- Identifies sick and/or injured animals and takes appropriate action
- Move animals within the shelter as needed
- Ensure that animal outcomes are properly documented to ensure accurate statistics and records are maintained for state inspections
- Ability to administer and document medications and vaccinations when needed
- Helps ensure that phone calls and emails are addressed
- Helps provide supervision and direction to volunteers
- Interacts with patrons and ensures that proper customer service is provided
- Help monitor inventory of supplies, vaccinations, cleaning supplies, and related items
- Communicates with representatives of city/county contract agencies regarding animal and intake issues and helps to ensure that the appropriate paperwork is completed for the Animal Control Officers
- Helps ensure that the shelter is OSHA compliant
- Responds as necessary to complaints
- Performs other duties as necessary
- Reports to the Shelter Manager and President of Animal Welfare Friends
Qualifications:
- A combination of education and/or animal welfare experience
- Effective interpersonal and written communication skills
- Successful applicant should be team-oriented and have excellent organizational and planning skills

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, talk/hear, and demonstrate and practice safe animal handling skills.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and be able to handle extra large dogs with little or no leash training.
